Architecture
October 2004
Entente Cordiale Centenary
La Friche la Belle de Mai, Marseille
Synopsis
Made in Scotland was a festival of Scottish architecture held in Marseille between 14 and 29 October 2004 curated by The Lighthouse, comprising:
- Foreign Bodies: this exhibition concerns how we represent and map the history of buildings and cities. This project, curated by Jonathan Charley from Strathclyde University, took the form of letters between Marseille and Glasgow about the political, social and historical similarities and contrasts between the two cities
- Landforms consisted of 17 Scottish projects constructed from 1999 to 2004. Images contained in the exhibition were chosen to reflect the new spirit and sense of identity emerging in Scottish Architecture
- The Maggie’s Centres exhibition looked at the way that architecture and design can create environments that can improve cities. The creation of the Maggie’s Cancer Centres involved leading architects as Frank Gehry (Dundee), Page and Park (Glasgow), Richard Murphy (Edinburgh) and Zaha Hadid (Fife)
- Fieldtrip seeks to highlight that much of what we think of as the natural landscapes is often the product of human intervention. From standing stones to power stations this exhibition explores what constitutes architecture.
